The Celestial Map & Hunminjeongeum

28 Mansions in the Sky, 28 Letters of Sound

The 28 letters of Hunminjeongeum correspond precisely to the 28 lunar mansions of the celestial map. The constellations of heaven are the system of sound — this is the cosmic principle King Sejong designed.

Revival of the Lost Four Letters

Arae-a · Deep Sound (ㆍ)

The fundamental vowel symbolizing 'Earth' in the heaven-earth-human triad. Lost from modern Korean, yet essential for the complete Jeongeum system.

Ban-siot · Yeorin-siot (△)

A consonant representing semi-dental sounds. Essential for naturally transcribing foreign phonemes like English /z/.

Yeorin-hieut (ㆆ)

A consonant representing the glottal stop. Essential for transcribing phonemes in Arabic, Hebrew, and other languages.

Yet-ieung · Yeorin-gieuk (ㆁ)

Independent initial consonant for the velar nasal /ŋ/. Used for English 'sing' and Chinese initial consonants.
